Engineering Philosophy-based Reflections on Efficient Development of Shale Gas in China

The Shale Gas Revolution began to have a significant impact on global supply and demand of natural gas; also the price trend of natural gas has been greatly affected. This phenomenon raised concerns among natural gas producers and consumers. China has abundant shale gas resources, but the development scale is small while facing problems including weak exploration and evaluation basis, overlapping royalties, complex terrestrial environment, lack of technical practices and accumulation, inadequate management and regulatory mechanisms, etc. To overcome these challenges for large-scale shale gas development, we believe that shale gas development is not only a single technical problem, but a systematic engineering demanding multidisciplinary research that will be bound to spread to humans, nature, and society. Therefore, to ensure the healthy development of China’s shale gas, it is required to coordinate global and local relationships, engineering and community relations, as well as to break up the conflicts between engineering and nature, engineering and economy, along with engineering and society.

From Green to Sustainability—Trends in the Assessment Methods of Green Buildings

This research investigates recent developments in assessment methods of green buildings and compares the differences in rating systems among the United Kingdom, USA, and Germany. There are indications that the rating systems are moving from green buildings to sustainable buildings. In order to understand the recent research in academic areas, we survey the recent Ph.D. dissertations and literature related to green building assessment. Discussion is provided on the major research areas of green buildings, which cover accountability of life cycle cost, methodology for balancing the three pillars, and government vision and public policy.

The industrialization of building construction is gradually becoming a new choice of construction technology driven by some great advantages such as high efficiency in construction, low energy consumption and environmental friendliness. Construction management plays an important part to ensure the quality of projects. A comparison between traditional on-site and modern off-site construction methods has been conducted. The streamlining of the process including the fabrication, transportation, stacking and assembling of precast components has also been analyzed with a discussion on the BIM application in the process.

Economic Analysis of Residential Distributed Solar Photovoltaic

Under the huge challenges of global energy conservation, emission reduction and energy security, distributed solar photovoltaic industry has become the key means to achieve economic restructuring and low carbon economy. Based on System Advisor Model software, the authors choose Baoji as the sample plot. Household load, unit investment, loan interest rate and loan fraction are used as influence factors to analyze the economic benefits of distributed solar photovoltaic in China. The result demonstrates that government incentives help to increase the profitability of distributed solar photovoltaic by a large extent; other factors that influence the profitability includes household load, unit investment cost, loan interest rate and loan fraction.

Study on Big Data-based Behavior Modification in Metro Construction

With the rapid development of metro construction in China, construction accidents frequently happen, which are significantly attributable to workers’ unsafe behavior. Behavior-based safety (BBS) is an effective method to modify workers’ unsafe behavior. This paper introduces the study on big data-based metro construction behavior modification, aiming to solve the problem of current research without consideration of workers’ personal characters. First, the behavior modification pushing mechanism based on content-based personalized recommendation is studied. Secondly, the development of behavior modification system of metro construction (BMSMC) is introduced. Thirdly, BMSMC practical applications using the unsafe behavior rate, S as a measuring indicator is implemented. Observations at one metro construction site in Wuhan indicate that the unsafe behavior rate of modified scaffolders at this work place decreased by 69.3%. At the same time, as of unmodified scaffolders at another work place for comparison, the unsafe behavior rate decreased by 56.9%, which validates the effectiveness of this system.

Constant changes in the construction market have resulted in individual projects being challenged to meet the long-term growth needs of large construction companies. Change should be based on the construction of this new model project group, to achieve better interaction, and to allow for a more rapid enterprise development. This paper is based on the system coupling analysis of large-scale construction enterprises and construction projects. A clear system presents itself and forms the basis of the system construction, institutional change and mechanism of the path between base construction projects and business growth.

To develop a lean and green construction industry, Lean Construction (LC) is proposed as a new construction production method to improve the efficient use of resources and the value of construction supply chains, which has received increasing research concerns from scholars and practitioners. Based on related articles covered by the Web of Science and Scopus databases between 1995 and 2014, this study conducts a scientometric analysis. The analysis identifies four core topics in existing research, including: Last Planner System (LPS); production control theory; improvement and evaluation of productivity; and principle of value. Three major directions of LC research: greening LC; Building Information Modeling (BIM) based LC; and lean safety management, are also proposed. Lastly, several recommendations for future LC research and practice are provided in the literature review.

Based on a literature review and the context characteristics of construction megaprojects (CMPs), a multidimensional connotation model of CMP citizenship behavior was proposed, including definitions, actors, and dimensions. Organizational citizenship behavior includes Cooperation Behavior (CoB), Collaboration Behavior (ClB), Innovation Behavior (IB), Voice Behavior (VB),Conscientiousness & Dedication Behavior (CDB), Benefit Defense Behavior (BDB) and Guanxi (Relations) Maintenance Behavior (GMB). Actors were divided into three levels that were project managers (individual), participant agents (group) and project organization (network).

Emergency management systems for military engineering projects have been established to enhance the capacities of wartime logistics and emergency logistical support. This study focuses on the combat characteristics of the warfare information system and based on analysis of emergency response for military combat systems, utilizes the concept of systematic combat and comprehensive integrated approach to investigate management of military engineering projects. Also, a basic mode for emergency management of military engineering projects based on the concept of “pre-war intelligent engineering on demand, wartime early engagement warning and monitoring, post-war emergency repair and rescue” and “strategic, comprehensive, integrated response” is proposed.

This study presents an exploration of the relationship of independent director ratios, audit committee quality and auditor independence with the internal control efficiency of publically listed engineering companies and forward suggestions and recommendations on raising the internal control efficiency of publically listed engineering companies.

From the perspective of systems engineering, this paper analyzes the characteristics of China’s bank card industry, including its accessibility, scale, and complexity. The author proposes a series of management methods for the financial informatization project by researching the general requirements of the financial information system and the characteristics and implementation of informatization in the bank card services. The paper concludes with an outlook on the future development of China’s bank card industry.

Based on systems engineering of Shenhua’s coal-based integrated energy projects, the paper also presents practice and experience in technological and management innovation.

In recent years, with the increasingly complex fabricated construction environment and increasingly challenging logistics management requirements, this paper proposes a model of intelligent logistics management based on radio frequency identification and building information modeling, which enables monitoring full life cycle of building components and improving construction efficiency through real-time uploading and tracking components and materials logistics information. The empirical model was typically used in the construction of a major theme park with good results achieved.

This paper aims at analyzing the solid waste emission issues between the industrialized and traditional residential building. The evaluation system of such rubble waste from construction and demolition (C&D waste), including evaluation index and model was proposed based on the “whole life cycle” comprehensive evaluation method. The empirical study was applied using a steel structure industrial type of construction, applied to a residential building and comparing against the traditional construction of such dwelling. The result shows that the industrial construction is an effective way to protect the environment.
