Abstract This paper delves into the ancient concept of shi yan zhi (poetry expressing aspirations) within Chinese poetry. It examines the precise meaning of zhi, the dialectical relationship between yan and zhi, and the historical development of “poetry expressing aspirations.” It further looks at how this foundational concept underpins the logical construction of Chinese poetic tradition, reaffirming its historical significance as the“manifesto” of Chinese poetics.
