Lihong Wang to receive SPIE Britton Chance Award

According to SPIE news dated on October 15, Britton Chance Center for Biomedical Photonics (BCCBMP) advisory board member Lihong Wang (Editorial board member of Frontiers of Optoelectronics) has been named as the winner of the 2015 Britton Chance Biomedical Optics Award for his pioneering technical contributions and visionary leadership in the development and application of photoacoustic tomography, photoacoustic microscopy, and photon transport modeling.
   Wang holds the Gene K. Beare Distinguished Professorship of Biomedical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. He graduated from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) with Bachelor of Optics in 1984 and Master of Optics in 1987. Since 1998, he became the visiting professor of HUST, and was appointed Cheung Kong Chair Professor of Biomedical Photonics by Ministry of Education of China in 2006. Due to his long term collaboration with BCCBMP, he was invited to join the international advisory board in the end of 2006, and has played an active role ever since then. He is also one of the overseas academic masters invited by Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO) funded by “The Program of Introducing Talents to Universities (111 project)” since 2007. Another master was the late Britton Chance. In 2014, Wang joined the international advisory board of the new established School of Engineering Sciences.
   Wang was recently awarded a $1.1 million grant from The National Institutes of Health (NIH) to research imaging of electrical activity of neurons deep inside the brain, as part of the national Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) initiative.
   Britton Chance award is presented annually by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, in recognition of outstanding lifetime contributions to the field of biomedical optics through the development of innovative, high impact technologies. Wang will receive this award at the start of the BiOS Hot Topics session on 7 February at SPIE Photonics West 2015 in San Francisco, California.
About BCCBMP
BCCBMP is part of Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. It was called Chance Laboratory of Biomedical Photonics when born in 1997 as the first laboratory for Biomedical Photonics research in China. BCCBMP was named in August 2006, which aims at exploring the neuronal information processing mechanisms and developing new methods of disease diagnosis and treatment based on photonics methods and technologies. Currently, BCCBMP aims to biomedical photonics research applied in neuroscience and immunology.
   The international advisory board of BCCBMP gathers 27 distinguished members from academia and business fields all over the world.
