Abstract   HTML   PDF (559KB)

To deal with problems in synergetic development of coal-based energy engineering, this paper, guided by the philosophy of engineering, proposes the synergetic management philosophy of “factors coordination, systems synergy, dynamic optimization and three-dimension planning.” The paper also establishes the synergetic management system characterized by systems factor synergy, resource-environment synergy and systems boundary extension and supported by the “two-wheel driven” management innovation and technological innovation. In addition, the paper presents a multi-objective dynamic optimization model for energy engineering, designed based on Shenhua’s own engineering practice, to analyze Pareto optimal solution in three scenarios: best resource allocation, minimal environmental impact and maximal value creation. This provides important reference to synergetic development strategies and decision-making in engineering management.

Abstract   HTML   PDF (326KB)

At present, the research on circular economy has made a lot of substantive results both at home and abroad. But for the papermaking enterprise, which is the representative of the light industry, few studies have analyzed the evaluation index system of circular economy. Since the current material flow analyses have limitations that the researchers cannot calculate materials with different units. The authors take advantage of the intrinsic correlation between the basic principle of value flow analysis and circular economy, and then analyze the dynamic changes of material flow and value flow through enterprises internal production process. Considering the resource output, the authors set up the layered structure of the evaluation index system, and then preliminarily determine the index form. Next, the authors use the frequency statistics analysis method to adjust indicators, forming a preliminary index system. After that, the principal component analysis and independent analysis are applied for screening. Finally, the authors build a circular economy evaluation index system for papermaking enterprise to provide scientific guidance for the process of circular economy.

Front. Eng. 2016, 3 (1): 18-23.
https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FEM-2016004

Abstract   HTML   PDF (2179KB)

With the increase of the urban population and the rapid development of urbanization in China, a large number of old buildings will be demolished and produce a huge amount of waste. Currently the recycling ratio of old building materials is very low, which results in the problems of resource waste and environment pollution. This greatly challenges urban sustainable development. With respect to the continual growth of demolition waste quantities, it is urgent to research how to implement effective management of demolition wastes by focusing on the demolition agents’ behavior. Based on the theory of complexity, this paper analyzes the demolition waste management from the perspective of complex adaptive system. Taking into account the “green” demolition (building dismantling) and conventional demolition (building demolished) methods, the agent-based modeling method with Repast Simphony platform is applied to simulate interactions between demolition agents. The longitudinal trend of demolition waste quantities is forecasted.

Front. Eng. 2016, 3 (1): 24-29.
https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FEM-2016007

Abstract   HTML   PDF (96KB)

This paper divides technological innovation into two stages: technology development and technology transfer. Then the authors use the panel data of 28 manufacturing industries during 2003–2012 to test the econometric regression model for the industry of the sub stages, which is a regulation on technological innovation in the environment. The results show that: (1) environmental regulation has a significant role in promoting China’s manufacturing technology research patent achievements, and technology into new products, and this indicated that “Porter hypothesis” in the manufacturing sector has been verified; (2) R&D and transfer expenditure have a positive impact on technological innovation. Finally, the authors put forward the corresponding policy recommendations for industry of the environmental regulation on the impact of technological innovation in phases.

Front. Eng. 2016, 3 (1): 30-38.
https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FEM-2016008

Abstract   HTML   PDF (712KB)

Frequent traffic accidents constitute a major danger to human beings. The accident-prone driver who has the stable physiological, psychological, and behavioral characteristics is one of the most prominent causes of traffic accidents. The internal link between the individual characteristics and the accident proneness has been a difficult point in the accident prevention research. The authors selected accident-prone drivers as cases and safe drivers as controls (case-control group) from 18,360 drivers who were enrolled from three public transportation incorporations of China using area stratified sampling method. The case-control groups were 1:1 matched. The authors performed genome-wide association study (GWAS) by 179 cases and 179 controls using the U.S. Affymetrix Genome-Wide Human Mapping SNP 6.0 Array. The authors observed that the gene frequencies of 34 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in three regions of cases were higher than those in the control (P<10−4). The authors then tested two independent replication sets for strong association 6 SNPs in 349 pairs of case-control drivers using the U.S. ABI 3730 sequencing method. The results indicated that SNP rs6069499 within linked CBLN4 gene are strongly associated with accident proneness (Pcombined=6.37×10−10). According to CBLN4 gene mainly involved in adrenal development and the regulation of secretion, the authors performed 12 biochemical parameters of the blood using radioimmunoassay. The levels of dopamine (DA) and adrenocorticotropic (ACTH) hormone showed significant differences between accident-prone drivers and safe drivers (PDA=0.03, PACTH=0.01). It is suggested that the accident-prone drivers may have the idiosyncrasy of susceptibility.

Front. Eng. 2016, 3 (1): 39-49.
https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FEM-2016015

Abstract   HTML   PDF (578KB)

In the highly overlapped contexts of urbanization and social transformation, and with the advent of the “Risk Society,” the social issues, called “Not in My Back Yard (NIMBY)” conflicts, caused by the construction or operation of the NIMBY projects have become a serious problem in China. Hence, it is in urgent need to find out the influencing factors and discover the generation mechanism of the NIMBY conflicts. From the perspective of social conflict theory, the authors built a process model of the NIMBY conflicts on the basis of identifying stakeholders and analyzing their interest interaction. Thereafter, the authors conducted a questionnaire survey, followed by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) revealing the underlying influencing factors of the NIMBY conflicts. Finally, they performed the confirmatory analysis method of Structural Equation Modeling to test the preliminary research hypothesis of the model and its interaction path in AMOS 18.0, with the results showing that unequal exchange and consensus mobilization will contribute to the formation of common consciousness of the opposition party, the opposition party’s common consciousness and action mobilization affects the generation of social conflicts. The process model reveals the generation mechanism of the NIMBY conflicts, and it facilitates further investigations in the governance of the NIMBY conflicts.

Carbon Quotas, Subsidies and Engineering Machinery Remanufacturing
Dong-bin Hu,Chen-xi Xiao,Xiao-hong Chen
Front. Eng. 2016, 3 (1): 50-58.
https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FEM-2016014

Abstract   HTML   PDF (730KB)

Engineering machinery manufacturing and remanufacturing are significant sources of greenhouse gases. In the context of emission reduction and resource recovery, the authors analyze the impact of current carbon quota allocations and government subsidies policies on manufacturers’ profits and recovery rates in a closed-loop supply chain. A simplified model consists of two manufacturers, one retailer and a third-party recycler. The study found that carbon quotas and government subsidies can both promote the improvement of recovery rates under certain conditions, and have similar effects in regulating interest distribution between manufacturers. The combination of the two methods can effectively realize the targets of recycling and carbon emissions reduction.

Da-zhao Gu
Front. Eng. 2016, 3 (1): 59-66.
https://doi.org/10.15302/J-FEM-2016010

Abstract   HTML   PDF (2536KB)

Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, and Gansu (hereafter generally referred as “the Western Area”) are major coal-producing areas in China due to rich coal resources and good mining conditions. However, the Western Area has a serious water shortage. The surface evaporation is huge and a great amount of mine water generated in coal mining is evaporated and lost after discharging to surface. In order to protect and utilize the water resources during large-scale coal mining in the Western Area, Shenhua Group has put forward a technological idea to store mine water in underground mined areas and successfully researched and developed the coal mine underground reservoir technology by solving the technical difficulties of water source prediction, reservoir site selection, reservoir capacity design, dam construction, safety guarantee, water quality control and so on through 20 years of exploration. Now Shenhua Group has successfully established a batch of reservoir in the Shendong Mining Area, obtaining great economic and social benefits. The technology is also extended to other western mining areas, providing an effective path for harmonic mining of coal and water resources in western China.
